Lawmaker Ikwechegh apologises for assaulting Bolt driver

He expressed regret over the incident, saying he was "embarrassed" by his actions.

House of Representatives member Alex Ikwechegh issued a formal apology on the House floor following his assault on a Bolt driver, Stephen Abuwatseya, which was captured on video and led to widespread public backlash.

Despite releasing an earlier statement of apology, Ikwechegh, addressing the House on Tuesday, expressed regret over the incident, saying he was “embarrassed” by his actions.

“Mr Speaker, honorable colleagues, I just want to state once again that I am human even though there were things that were said and those things I regret. I apologize to all Nigerians regardless of the provocation,” the Abia lawmaker said.

“There should be no reason why I should react in that form. So, I want to use this opportunity to appeal to all Nigerians. Let us let what has happened, remain in the past, and let us forge forward.”
