The Lagos Mass Transit Red Line Rail is set to begin partial operations today (Wednesday), as announced by the spokesperson for the Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA), Kolawole Ojelabi, in a statement on Tuesday.
According to LAMATA, the Red Line Rail is part of the Strategic Transport Master Plan, which includes six rail lines and one monorail designed for Lagos. The trains will provide free transportation for passengers, operating four daily trips between Oyingbo and Agbado.
This transport project also connects Lagos with Ogun State, where many Lagos workers and business owners reside.
Ojelabi noted that this milestone marks the culmination of extensive planning, staff training, and the installation of all necessary security features. It follows a successful six-week trial run conducted without passengers to ensure the system’s safety, reliability, and efficiency.
“Starting Wednesday, August 28, the Red Line system will begin interacting with non-fee-paying passengers in organized groups to gather feedback before the commencement of commercial operations.
“This partial operation, similar to the test phase of the Blue Line, represents a significant step forward in realizing the Lagos State Government’s vision of a modern, efficient, integrated, and sustainable transportation system.
“The first phase of the Red Line, spanning 27 kilometers from Agbado to Oyingbo, will offer a reliable and affordable transportation option for commuters, helping to reduce traffic congestion and improve the quality of life for Lagos residents,” Ojelabi stated.
