The Lagos State Government has released a new flood advisory for certain regions within the state.
According to a statement issued on Tuesday by Lekan Shodeinde, the Permanent Secretary of the Office of Drainage Services and Water Resources, residents are being cautioned about the likelihood of heavy rainfall occurring between August 14 and 18.
The government specifically directed residents of Apapa, Badagry, Eti Osa, Ikeja, Ikorodu, Ikoyi, Lagos Island, and Ojo to be prepared for exceptionally heavy rainfalls during this week and the days that follow. The potential for rapid flooding exists due to these rainfalls.
Citing information from the Flood Emergency Warning System (FEWS) Central Hub of the Federal Ministry of the Environment, Shodeinde emphasized the importance of constant vigilance among residents in the aforementioned areas. This vigilance should extend to both the duration of the rainfall and the period following it.
Residents living in flood-prone and low-lying areas are advised to make arrangements to relocate to higher ground until the rainy spell subsides.
Shodeinde reiterated the significance of avoiding the act of wading through flooded areas, particularly while it is raining. The force of the water can pose a serious risk, potentially leading to being carried away by the current.
The issuance of this warning serves as a preventive measure against avoidable loss of life and property, a recurring outcome associated with such weather-related incidents.
