The Lagos State government has decided to end the 50% discount on public transport fares in the state.
The announcement was made by the Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA) in a statement issued on November 4, 2023.
Starting from November 5, commuters will revert to the old rates for public transport systems, including the Bus Rapid Transport (BRT), Standard routes, First and Last Mile, the Blue Line Rail, and Ferry services.
“The 50% rebate in transport fare in the regulated transport system in Lagos ends on Sunday,” the Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority said in a statement on Saturday.
The statement informed commuters that starting “from Monday, November 6, 2023, transport fare will return to the pre-2nd August 2023 rate.”
This decision comes after Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu had initially reduced transport fares by 50% for state-owned transport services and 25% for yellow buses on all routes in an effort to mitigate the impact of the fuel subsidy removal.
The discounted rates were implemented on August 2. In October, it was reported that these fare reductions had saved Lagos commuters ₦1.9 billion in eight weeks on transport costs.
