Labour unions protest at Abuja airport, disrupt flights

Members of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) staged a protest at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja on Thursday, causing disruptions to flights and traffic.

The organized labour, numbering in the hundreds, assembled at the airport around 8:58 a.m., implementing their directive to halt all flights to Owerri, the capital of Imo State. This demonstration is part of a series of actions in response to the recent attack on NLC President Joe Ajaero.

The protest comes on the heels of a nationwide strike declared by the NLC and TUC, scheduled to commence on Tuesday, November 14th. The strike is a result of the escalating face-off between the unions and the Imo State Government.

The procession of workers commenced as they formed a convoy heading towards the airport. Upon reaching the airport, the protesters attempted to enter but were met with resistance from the military at the checkpoint. In response, the demonstrators blocked both entry and exit points of the airport, causing significant traffic disruptions on both sides. Travelers were compelled to navigate the chaos on foot to access the airport.

The labour unions have vowed to focus their attention on Imo State, signaling their solidarity with the ongoing tensions and demanding justice for the attack on their president.
