Kwara State: Police rescues widow of slain monarch, arrests 13 suspects

The Kwara State Police Command has made progress in the investigation into the assassination of Oba Olusegun Aremu-Cole, the Olukoro of Koro Kingdom, as it announces the arrest of 13 male suspects in connection with the heinous crime, Voice of Nigeria (VON) report.

Oba Olusegun Aremu-Cole was gruesomely murdered in his palace on February 1, 2024, sending shockwaves throughout the region. The arrests were confirmed in a statement by the Public Relations Officer of the Kwara State Police Command, DSP Ejire Adeyemi Toun.

According to the statement, the Inspector General of Police, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, approved the deployment of a police chopper for aerial surveillance to aid in combing the forest/boundary between Kwara and Ekiti States, where the perpetrators were believed to be hiding.

VON gathered that a joint operation involving the Police, Military, D.S.S, and Vigilante/Hunters was launched, resulting in the successful rescue of Olori Iyabo Aremu-Cole, the wife of the late monarch, and another individual on February 5th at approximately 22:30 hours. Both rescued victims have been reunited with their families in good health.

The 13 male suspects are currently in police custody, undergoing rigorous interrogation to aid in the apprehension of other members of the gang still at large.

Commissioner of Police Victor Olaiya reaffirmed the commitment of law enforcement authorities to ensure that the perpetrators face the full wrath of the law. He urged the public to remain calm and vigilant while going about their daily activities.

The late Oba Olusegun Aremu-Cole, a retired Brigadier General in his mid-sixties, was assassinated by suspected kidnappers in his palace on Thursday night, with his wife and another person abducted during the attack. Eyewitnesses reported that the kidnappers struck around 9:00 PM, firing shots indiscriminately.
