During the early hours of Friday, December 1, 2023, armed gunmen launched an audacious attack on the residence of the Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) in Lokoja, Kogi State.
The assailants struck at approximately 3:30 am, engaging in a fierce gun battle with the security personnel stationed at the commissioner’s residence. The exchange of gunfire persisted for over 30 minutes until additional security forces could arrive to reinforce the besieged location.
Fortunately, no lives were lost during the harrowing attack; however, substantial damage to property was reported as a result of the intense confrontation. The incident comes on the heels of a separate alarming event where a mob descended upon the state electoral office merely a day prior.
In response to the heightened security concerns, a cohesive team of security personnel has been swiftly deployed to safeguard the residence of the Electoral Commissioner. This move aims to fortify the location and prevent any potential recurrence of such attacks.
