A coalition known as Katsina Groups for National Unity and Integration has appealed to the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) to suspend its planned two-day warning protest slated for February 27 and 28, TheCable reports.
In a communique released after a meeting held in Katsina, the coalition acknowledged Nigerians’ economic challenges but emphasized the government’s efforts to address the situation. They cited recent initiatives such as the inauguration of a committee on national minimum wage and the establishment of compressed natural gas (CNG) conversion centers across the country as evidence of government commitment.
Highlighting the importance of dialogue, the coalition noted that the federal government had engaged with stakeholders, including state governors, to tackle rising living costs and insecurity. They urged the NLC to explore further dialogue with the government before resorting to nationwide protests.
Expressing concerns over the potential disruption caused by protests, the coalition cautioned against actions that could undermine peace and stability. They referenced past protests, including the ENDSARS movement, as examples of how street demonstrations can adversely affect the country.
While advocating for government intervention to alleviate hardships faced by Nigerians, the coalition called on sub-national governments to complement federal efforts in addressing economic challenges.
The communique was signed by Hamza Saulawa, Bishir Unguwa, and Rilwanu Mukhtar and urged the NLC to continue engaging the government through dialogue until their demands are met.
