Kaduna residents protest over alleged farmland pollution by Kaduna Refinery

The protesters, mostly women, claimed that chemicals released by the refinery three days ago have devastated their farms, leading to the death of animals and adversely affecting the health of residents.

Residents of the Kapam community in Chikun Local Government Area of Kaduna State have staged a protest against the alleged environmental pollution of their farms and community by the Kaduna Refinery and Petrochemical Company (KRPC).

The protesters, mostly women, claimed that chemicals released by the refinery three days ago have devastated their farms, leading to the death of animals and adversely affecting the health of residents, particularly children and women.

Carrying placards with various messages, the protesters blocked the main gate of the Kaduna Refinery, preventing staff from entering their offices.

The women expressed concerns about air and water pollution, which they say have caused health issues and disrupted their livelihoods. They also voiced their frustration over the refinery’s failure to implement proper safety measures and compensate affected communities.

They are demanding immediate action from the federal government and the refinery’s management to address the environmental hazards caused by the refinery’s operations.

The management of the Kaduna Refinery is yet to issue an official statement regarding the allegations raised by the protesters.
