Jennifer Lopez has reportedly filed for divorce from Ben Affleck, marking the end of their marriage just two years after they rekindled their romance and tied the knot.
The Hollywood power couple, famously dubbed “Bennifer” during their initial relationship in the early 2000s, had reignited their love nearly two decades later. However, according to Hollywood trade outlet Variety and celebrity gossip site TMZ, Lopez filed for divorce on Tuesday in a Los Angeles court.
Lopez’s representative declined to comment on the matter, and Affleck’s publicist did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
This was the fourth marriage for the 55-year-old singer and actress and the second for the 52-year-old Oscar-winning actor and director. The couple first met in 2002 on the set of the film “Gigli,” which was widely criticized. Their relationship quickly became a media sensation, leading to an engagement announcement. However, they postponed their 2003 wedding and eventually ended their relationship in early 2004.
In 2021, “Bennifer” once again captivated the public when they were spotted together, reigniting their romance. “It’s a beautiful love story that we got a second chance,” Lopez said in an interview around that time.
They officially announced their engagement in April 2022 and married in Las Vegas in July of that year. The following month, they held a lavish ceremony at Affleck’s 87-acre estate in Georgia, with Hollywood friends like Matt Damon and Kevin Smith in attendance.
Last year, the couple reportedly purchased a $60 million home in Los Angeles. However, rumors of marital strife began circulating earlier this year. Fans noticed Lopez celebrated her 55th birthday without Affleck, and reports indicated they had sold their shared home, with Affleck moving into a luxury bachelor pad.
According to People magazine, the couple’s differing approaches to fame caused tension in their relationship. “She likes to open her heart to her fans and to the world,” an unnamed source said, while Affleck is “more introspective and private.”
Divorce papers filed by Lopez list their separation date as April 26, 2024, and TMZ reported that the couple is no longer on speaking terms.
Lopez was previously married to actor Ojani Noa, dancer Cris Judd, and singer Marc Anthony, with whom she shares twins Max and Emme. Affleck was previously married to actress Jennifer Garner, with whom he shares three children: Violet, Seraphina, and Samuel.
