“Imagine a gender-equal world. A world free of bias, stereotypes, and discrimination. A world that’s diverse, equitable, and inclusive. A world where difference is valued and celebrated. Together we can forge women’s equality. Collectively we can all #InspireInclusion. Celebrate women’s achievements. Raise awareness about discrimination. Take action to drive gender parity. IWD belongs to everyone, everywhere. Inclusion means all IWD action is valid.” – IWD website

As we observe International Women’s Day (IWD) on March 8th, 2024, it serves as a poignant reminder of the pivotal role women play in driving social, economic, and political advancement worldwide. This year’s theme, “Inspire Inclusion”, emphasises the urgent need to prioritise investment in women and girls to accelerate progress towards gender equality and inclusive development.

Women have long been the backbone of societies, contributing their talents, skills, and labor to every facet of life. From nurturing families and communities to leading businesses and advocating for change, women’s contributions are indispensable to the functioning and prosperity of societies globally. Yet, despite their invaluable contributions, women continue to face systemic barriers and inequalities that limit their full participation and potential.

Investing in women is not only a matter of moral imperative but also a strategic imperative for sustainable development and economic growth. When women are empowered, economies thrive, communities prosper, and societies become more resilient. By investing in women’s education, healthcare, economic opportunities, and leadership development, we unlock their potential as agents of change and catalysts for progress.

The commemoration itself signifies the important role women play in society. “With well over a century of history and change, the first International Women’s Day (IWD) was held in March 1911. IWD isn’t country, group, or organisation-specific. It’s a day of collective global activism and celebration that belongs to all those committed to forging women’s equality,” IWD said.

It is therefore acknowledged that education is one of the most powerful tools for empowering women and girls, enabling them to acquire knowledge, skills, and confidence to pursue their aspirations and contribute meaningfully to society. Investing in girls’ education yields multiple dividends, including improved health outcomes, increased economic opportunities, and greater social and political participation. By ensuring access to quality education for all girls, we lay the foundation for a more equitable and prosperous future for generations to come.

Economic empowerment is critical for advancing women’s rights and fostering inclusive growth. By investing in women’s entrepreneurship, access to finance, and participation in the labor market, we can unlock new sources of innovation, creativity, and productivity. Closing the gender gap in economic opportunities could Contribute to global GDP and lift millions of women and their families out of poverty, creating a ripple effect of positive social and economic change.

Also, by investing in women’s leadership development and promoting gender parity in political, corporate, and public institutions, we ensure that women’s voices are heard, perspectives are valued, and policies are inclusive of diverse needs and experiences. When women have a seat at the table, they can advocate for policies that advance gender equality, social justice, and sustainable development.

As we celebrate International Women’s Day 2024, let us heed the call to invest in women and accelerate progress towards a more equitable, inclusive, and prosperous world for all. Governments, businesses, civil society organisations, and individuals must prioritise gender equality in their policies, practices, and investments. By investing in women, we not only unlock their potential but also unlock the full potential of societies to thrive and prosper.
