I never said my music will glorify God – Spyro

"I don't want to be boxed as a gospel artist. I can do whatever because that's what music is really about - a mode of expression".

Spyro soared to commercial prominence after his single ‘Who Is Your Guy’ achieved widespread acclaim, resonating through speakers nationwide and exposing him into the international spotlight.

Despite achieving mainstream success in the Afrobeats genre, Spyro has consistently emphasized his commitment to practicing Christianity and his mission to impact the music industry positively for God.

In 2023, the artist, honored with the collaboration of the year award at the 2023 Headies, expressed on his Instagram story his intention to shape the industry for God through the creation of timeless music.

“I am here for a reason, I am God’s ambassador here and gradually we will take these grounds for him,” Spyro said on his Instagram story.

Spyro’s overt demonstration of his Christian faith has led some to categorize him as a gospel artist, despite his music often exploring secular themes. However, in a recent interview with Pulse Nigeria, Spyro clarified that he does not identify as a gospel artist and never claimed his music would explicitly glorify God. He stressed that he is a lover of God but prefers not to be confined to a specific genre.

“I don’t want to be boxed as a gospel artist. I can do whatever because that’s what music is really about – a mode of expression”.

While acknowledging his ability to create music reflecting his Christian beliefs, Spyro asserted that he is open to producing various genres. He explained that if he intended to create music specifically for the glorification of God, he would venture into the gospel genre. Nevertheless, Spyro takes pride in crafting music that communicates diverse messages, whether it be offering advice in ‘Billing,’ celebrating friendship in ‘Who Is Your Guy,’ or expressing affection in ‘Only Fine Girl.’
