Governor Inuwa Yahaya of Gombe State has expressed concerns about meeting the new N70,000 minimum wage benchmark due to the state’s limited allocation.
Following President Bola Tinubu’s recent assent to the minimum wage agreement with joint labor unions, Yahaya addressed stakeholders on Tuesday at the Gombe Government House banquet hall regarding the planned nationwide #Endbadgovernance protest. He stated that it would be challenging for Gombe State, and likely many other states, to meet the new wage requirements.
Yahaya praised the Federal Government for its initiative in donating rice to the state but voiced frustration over the delay in receiving these essential supplies, noting, “We are yet to receive the Federal Government’s 20 trucks of rice to Gombe State.”
The governor emphasized the state’s dedication to providing relief to its citizens, highlighting previous palliative distributions and ongoing investments in human capital development, education, health, and agriculture.
Addressing the upcoming protest, Yahaya stressed the importance of maintaining peace and order. He acknowledged the critical role of civil society organizations, labor unions, and traders in ensuring social stability and economic resilience.
He called for continued cooperation and dialogue to collectively navigate these challenging times.
