Peter Okoye, also known as Mr. P, a former member of the defunct P-Square duo, has penned an open letter to his brother Paul Okoye, known as Rudeboy, following a recent conflict that led to their second split.
The P-Square group, made up of the twin brothers, first parted ways in 2016 but reunited in 2021. However, Rudeboy confirmed in an interview last month that the group has split again, without providing specific reasons. In that interview, he claimed the group’s success was largely due to his efforts, emphasizing that he wrote most of their hit songs.
In response, Mr. P took to his verified Facebook page on Monday to publish an open letter accusing his brother of disrespecting his talent, wife, and family.
Full Letter:
“My dear brother Paul,
As I’ve said many times before, I am not competing with you or anyone else. However, it’s disheartening to see you give interviews where you consistently undermine my contributions to the group we both created and built together. In your recent interviews, you claimed to have written and sung 99% of all P-Square songs and discredited my work, even going as far as dismissing our song with TI, ‘Ejeajo,’ which I wrote, by pointing to its YouTube views.
You’ve never acknowledged other hits like ‘Get-Squared,’ ‘Bizzy Body,’ ‘Personally,’ ‘Roll It,’ ‘Temptation,’ ‘Alingo,’ ‘More than a Friend,’ ‘Shekini,’ ‘Say Your Love,’ ‘Gimme Dat,’ ‘Senorita,’ ‘IGBEdu,’ and others. Were these also failures in your eyes?
Whenever I’ve spoken about P-Square in interviews, I’ve always referred to ‘we’ and ‘us,’ seeing us as a team. But you always speak in terms of ‘I’ and ‘me,’ even when I’m right beside you, as if I never existed.
My brother, neither of us is the most talented artist in the world, but you fail to recognize that God granted us this talent and even gave us another chance after our first breakup. Instead, you’ve turned the most awarded and decorated music group in Africa into a laughingstock once again.
What you need to understand is that the fans didn’t fall in love with P-Square because of who sang or danced the most. What made us special was the magic that came from our combined effort—us two! P-Square was a force, and the fans loved us for our uniqueness and unity.
We both have talent, and I’ve often praised your songwriting abilities in our interviews. I’ve also acknowledged anyone who has written a song for us or even for me as Mr. P. But instead of being grateful, you find satisfaction in belittling me, forgetting that it is by God’s grace that we’ve come this far.
Rather than teaming up with me to reclaim our number one spot in the music industry, you chose to align with Jude to claim the number one spot in P-Square, always looking for opportunities to marginalize and humiliate me.
You constantly portray yourself as P-Square’s sole songwriter, composer, producer, singer, backup vocalist, video director, promoter, manager, and even choreographer. You are the author and finisher of P-Square! In fact, I give you 100% of everything, instead of the 99% you claim.
I blame myself for not addressing your false claims in April 2015, when you said you wrote and sang all of P-Square’s songs. I kept quiet for the sake of peace, as advised by family and friends, and now I’m paying the price.
So, let me ask you: Is Rudeboy or Mr. P bigger and more successful than P-Square today? Are we individually selling out arenas and stadiums like we did as P-Square? Are we topping global music charts as solo artists? Do we command the same massive audiences?
I often wonder, what do you gain by constantly disrespecting and belittling me? You’ve disrespected my wife, my family, my talent, my ideas, and even sided with Jude when he was clearly trying to oppress me.
Now it seems you’re trying to turn the fans against me, making them believe I’m jealous of you. But no matter how hard you try, they won’t hate me—they’ll hate us both because we’ve disappointed and failed them.
I hope you’re happy now. I genuinely wish you all the best, bro. As for those who believe these lies and leave negative comments on my page, I understand because you’ve been fed the wrong narrative for a long time. Please, let me focus on my music in peace.
As for the EFCC matter, I’ll address it before the end of today. Stay tuned. Peace.”
