Gunmen ‘kill 17’ in attack on Benue community

Gunmen reportedly killed 17 people during an attack on the Mbaikyor Mbalom community in Gwer LGA, Benue state.

According to a community source who spoke with TheCable, the gunmen invaded the village late Thursday night.

He also stated that during the attack, they burned down many houses before murdering unarmed people, including a young boy.

According to the source, community members picked up the corpses on Friday morning.

“The gunmen attacked my home, Mbaikyor Mbalom council ward in Gwer local government of Benue state,” the source said.

He identified those killed as Peter Tion, Nyityo Kyoon, Iorfa Ukombor, Doopinen Awua, Tyoshaa Mkaanem, Asan Ate, Asough Ate, Igba Byuan, and Master Ter Byuan.

Terzungwe Asoo Ate, MWO Mbatsavbun Gbatar (retd), John Ndahagh Tyohemba, Tertsea Ukombor, Akuma Kpenge, Abume Kpenge, Terzungwe Aulugh, and an unidentified young boy are also among those killed.

When contacted, Catherine Anene, spokesperson for the Benue police command, said she was unaware of the incident.

“I don’t have that information,” Anene said.

Several people were reportedly killed in a clash between rival militia groups in Benue’s Ukom LGA.
