Governor Alex Otti of Abia State has signed a bill repealing pension payments to former governors and their deputies. This move comes after the Abia House of Assembly passed the bill to cancel ‘The Abia State Governors & Deputy Governors Pensions Law No 4 of 2001’.
The previous law, which was approved by former Governor Orji Kalu in 2001, entitled former Abia governors and deputies to various benefits, including 100 percent of the annual basic salaries of the incumbent governor and deputy, as well as provisions for cooks, stewards, drivers, and security personnel.
Governor Otti emphasized that the new law is intended to promote good governance and stewardship in the state, stating that leadership should prioritize serving the public rather than personal interests.
He commended the state House of Assembly for swiftly acting on the executive bill, highlighting the importance of collaboration between the executive and legislative branches of government.
Otti reiterated that government policies should prioritize public interest, focusing on supporting pensioners who need financial assistance.
