Governor Ahmadu Fintiri of Adamawa State and the Commissioner of Police, Babatola Afolabi, have issued appeals for calm in the aftermath of a violent clash between police officers and military personnel on Tuesday evening.

The incident unfolded at Target Junction in Yola North Local Government Area, involving an exchange of gunfire that led to an attack on a police facility and the unfortunate killing of Inspector Jacob Daniel.

Currently, the army has not provided an official statement regarding the conflict’s circumstances.

Commissioner Afolabi, in a statement released on Wednesday through the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Suleiman Yahaya Nguroje, declared an urgent investigation to ensure justice prevails and peace is restored. He stressed that any attacks on security officers in the line of duty would no longer be tolerated.

The commissioner emphasized the sanctity of all security personnel’s lives, assuring the public that conflicts of this nature would be rigorously addressed within the existing legal frameworks. Afolabi reaffirmed the commitment of the police command to safeguarding lives and property, advocating for collaboration with other security agencies to protect the fundamental rights of security operatives.

He noted that the top management of both security agencies is actively working within legal frameworks to address the situation and maintain order.

Governor Fintiri in a statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Humwashi Wonosikou, expressed regret over the gunshots in Yola and urged the Adamawa State residents to continue their normal activities. He assured that the government is effectively managing the situation and appealed to all parties involved to exercise restraint for the overall peace of the state.

Governor Fintiri further urged all security personnel on special assignments to remain at their duty posts, emphasizing the need for a high sense of maturity in their conduct.
