Girl killed, 4 injured in Ekiti building collapse

The building collapsed suddenly without prior notice or suspicion, leading other occupants in the adjoining wing of the building to immediately relocate after a near-death experience.

A tragic incident occurred in an Ekiti community where a 13-year-old girl lost her life due to the collapse of an ancient building.

The incident took place in Igede-Ekiti, the headquarters of Irepodun/Ifelodun local government area, in the early hours of the day.

Four other individuals, who are reportedly siblings and the parents of the deceased child, were also injured in the collapse and are currently receiving medical treatment in the hospital.

Governor Biodun Oyebanji, during his visit to the site of the building collapse, described the incident as devastating and called on occupants of dilapidated buildings in the state to relocate to safeguard their lives.

The governor, represented by his deputy, Mrs. Monisade Afuye, visited the hospital where the victims are receiving medical attention, wished them a speedy recovery, and promised that the government would cover their medical expenses.

He also directed the Ekiti State Emergency Management Agency (EKSEMA) to arrange alternative housing for the affected family. The Commissioner for Health, Dr. Oyebanji Filani, was tasked with overseeing the treatment of the victims to ensure their quick recovery.

One of the landlord’s children, Lanre Olagunju, explained that the incident occurred around 2 am and confirmed one casualty. He stated that the building collapsed suddenly without prior notice or suspicion, leading other occupants in the adjoining wing of the building to immediately relocate after a near-death experience.
