Governor Siminalayi Fubara of Rivers has appointed Edison Ehie as his chief of staff.
Joseph Johnson, the commissioner of information and communications, confirmed Edison’s appointment to TheCable on Monday.
Johnson stated that Fubara would swear in Ehie and five other special advisers on Monday morning (today).
Ehie, a Fubara ally, was elected speaker of the Rivers Assembly in October by a faction of the house after being removed as leader.
In December, he resigned as a Rivers House of Assembly member representing Ahoada East Constituency II.
Nyesom Wike, minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) and immediate past governor of Rivers, and his successor, Fubara, have been in a power struggle over the state’s political structure.
The feud between the two men sparked a political crisis in the state, which resulted in the demolition of the state House of Assembly complex.
Following the crisis, Wike’s associates in the Rivers House of Assembly began impeachment proceedings against the governor.
Fubara’s allies opposed the impeachment efforts.
Following that, 27 state House of Assembly members defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress.
At the time, Ehie declared the seats of the defecting lawmakers vacant.
The political crisis also prompted the resignation of some Fubara cabinet members.
On December 18, the governor and Wike agreed to end their political feud after President Bola Tinubu intervened.
Some of the resolutions reached at the meeting included the following:
All matters instituted in court by the various factions should be “immediately” withdrawn, the 27 lawmakers who defected to the APC should be reinstated as members of the assembly, and the impeachment proceedings against Fubara should be withdrawn.
The governor’s impeachment notice was rescinded by the 27 lawmakers who signed it.
The governor has also sworn in the commissioners who have resigned from his administration.
