Around ten people have reportedly died following a cholera outbreak in Ndibokote village, Ezza Inyimagu, located in the Izzi Local Government Area of Ebonyi State.
The outbreak, which began on Monday, claimed the life of a nursing mother, leaving behind her 9-month-old baby. Ebonyi State’s Commissioner for Health, Dr. Moses Ekuma, confirmed the incident during a visit to Iziogo Health Centre on Wednesday, stating that at least ten deaths had been recorded, while about 20 others affected were responding to treatment.
Dr. Ekuma outlined the steps taken by the state government to contain the outbreak and thanked Governor Francis Nwifuru for swiftly approving funds for medical supplies to combat the disease.
The Commissioner noted that three treatment centres, including Iziogo Health Centre, Sudan Mission, Onuenyim, and Ndibokote villages, had been established in the area.
He advised residents to take precautionary measures to prevent the further spread of the disease.
He said, “Once you start experiencing symptoms of diarrhoea and vomiting, or even any related symptoms, you should rush to any of these emergency treatment centres.”
He revealed that he had embarked on the emergency rapid response to avoid further loss of life in the area and commended development partners such as the World Health Organisation and UNICEF for their support.
