The administration of Yola-North Local Government Area in Adamawa State has confirmed a cholera outbreak that has claimed the lives of four people.
Council Chairman, Jibrin Ibrahim, disclosed this to reporters during his visit to victims at the Infectious Disease Centre in Yola on Sunday. He revealed that 36 others affected by the outbreak are currently receiving treatment in various hospitals in the area.
The outbreak was reported in Alkalawa, Ajiya, and Limawa wards within the local government.
“Earlier, we had 20 reported cases, but now the number has risen to over 40, with four fatalities. Thankfully, many patients have been stabilized and are receiving proper medical attention,” Ibrahim said.
He praised the swift response from health workers, the Red Cross, and international partners for their efforts in managing the situation. Ibrahim attributed the outbreak to contaminated water caused by recent flooding in some areas.
He urged residents to maintain clean surroundings, ensure they drink clean water, and wash vegetables and fruits thoroughly before consumption.
Last Wednesday, the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention disclosed that the country had recorded 7,663 suspected cases of cholera in 35 states and the Federal Capital Territory across 280 Local Government Areas so far in 2024.
