A late-night fire razed a popular food commodity market in Ipetumodu, the headquarters of the Ife-North local government area of Osun State.
The market, popularly called Akinola market, is a weekly market usually open for sale on Friday.
It was gathered that the fire started at the section where Yams is being sold after the sales last Friday before it spread to other parts, destroying food items worth millions of naira.
A resident Sola Omilana disclosed that people still thronged to the market early hours on Saturday, sympathizing with shop owners over the incidents.
Confirming the incident, Spokesperson, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, NSCDC, Osun State, Kehinde Adeleke disclosed that the incident was caused by dirt set on fire by shop owners after the day’s business.
“Preliminary findings showed that the was as a result of dirt set on fire by shop owners after the day’s business. But they did not put out the fire before leaving the market at night.
“Food commodities worth millions of naira were destroyed in the incident”, she added.
