A fire broke out in a one-storey building in Lagos, housing an orphanage home on Wole Madariola Street, Aguda area on Sunday.
Seven children were rescued from the incident.
According to the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), the fire was caused by a power surge from an air conditioning unit in the building.
The Agency received a distress call about the fire around 2:43 pm.
The inferno quickly spread, posing a significant threat to the orphanage and the children residing there.
Prompt action and rescue efforts successfully saved seven children from harm’s way.
“Seven boys, aged between one and seven years, were promptly evacuated from the Home. And safely relocated to the compound opposite it.
“The Management Team of the Home informed LRT about plans to temporarily relocate the children to the owner’s house to ensure their welfare.
“The fire initially spread to the storage room of the home, but it has been extinguished, and dampening down concluded.
“Post-Disaster Assessment revealed that the whole first floor was salvaged. But the fire was contained in the store room, and the rest of the ground floor was also salvaged.
After the rescue operation, LASEMA handed over the children to the Child Protection Unit of the Lagos State Ministry of Youth and Social Development.”
From there, the children were formally handed over to the RED CROSS.
Thankfully, there were no injuries or casualties reported in this near-fatal incident. The rescue operation was efficiently completed in a record time.
