On Wednesday, the Federal Government assured Nigerians that there would be stable electricity during the Christmas and New Year celebrations.
It said efforts were being made to make this a reality, stressing that the Federal Ministry of Power was working hard to provide a more reliable and improved power infrastructure.
The Minister of Power, Chief Adebayo Adelabu, disclosed this in a statement issued by his ministry in Abuja while felicitating Nigerians at Christmas and New Year.
Nigeria’s power supply has been persistently unstable despite the privatisation of the successor electricity generation and distribution companies in November 2013.
The country’s power sector currently generates and supplies between 3,500 megawatts and 4,500MW of electricity to a population of over 200 million people.
On Tuesday, for instance, the country’s power generation as of 6am was 4,288.21MW, which was, however, lower than the peak generation of 5,090.70MW that was generated the preceding day being December 25, 2023.
The statement from the power ministry stated that Adelabu promised that there would be adequate power during the yuletide, adding that the minister “also assured of efforts being made to ensure stable power supply during the Christmas and New Year celebrations.”
The minister was quoted as saying, “Furthermore, I want to assure all citizens that efforts are diligently underway to enhance our nation’s power supply during this festive season.
“Recognising the importance of electricity in our daily lives, my ministry is committed to ensuring a more reliable and improved power infrastructure.
“We understand the significance of uninterrupted power, especially during celebrations, and are working tirelessly to provide a stable electricity supply.
“Your comfort and enjoyment during this Yuletide season are paramount, and we are dedicated to making substantial progress in delivering an enhanced power experience for all.”
Meanwhile, the minister noted that in the spirit of Christmas, “I extend heartfelt felicitations to Christians and fellow Nigerians. May this season of love and sacrifice inspire unity and compassion among us.
“As we reflect on the birth of Jesus Christ, a symbol of love and peace, let us emulate His spirit of selflessness and embrace one another across faiths and divides. Unity is paramount for our nation’s development, thriving in an environment of peace and tranquility.”
