A 32-year-old female marketing employee working at a bank in Ikorodu, Lagos State, tragically took her own life.
The deceased, identified as Amarachi Ugochukwu, was reported to have ingested an insecticide within the bank premises.
The incident occurred on Monday around 1 pm, as Ugochukwu discreetly made her way to the restroom, where she consumed the toxic substance without the knowledge of her colleagues. Concern arose among her coworkers when her phone, left unattended on her table, kept ringing without any response from her.
Subsequently, a police source confirmed to our correspondent that Ugochukwu was discovered lifeless inside the restroom, alongside the insecticide bottle and a suicide note.
In the suicide note, she attributed her decision to the harsh economic conditions, expressing despair over various aspects of her life.
Ugochukwu wrote, “Nothing is working in my life. My figures are low. My brain is clogged up. The economy is getting harder. My decisions are wrong. My mind is messed up. The future doesn’t seem bright at all. I see extreme hardship. I can’t bear the pain anymore,” she wrote in the suicide note.
Ugochukwu apologised to her parents and other members of her family in the suicide note.
“I’m sorry mum, I’m sorry dad, I’m sorry Nene, Okwe, Toto, Nazor, Chuchu, Ifunanya,” she added.
She concluded by writing, “Dear Lord, have mercy on me!”
The bank manager reported the incident to the police, stating that Ugochukwu had locked herself in the restroom to commit suicide. When the door was forced open, she was found lifeless. A medical doctor confirmed her death, and the police removed the body, depositing it at Ikorodu General Hospital for autopsy.
Investigations into the incident are underway by the Lagos State Police. Despite attempts to contact the Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, Benjamin Hundeyin, there was no response at the time of reporting.
