The Federal Executive Council (FEC) has given its approval for the establishment of a Humanitarian and Poverty Alleviation Trust Fund in Nigeria. The Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, Betta Edu, disclosed this decision during a briefing with State House correspondents after a recent FEC meeting at the Presidential Villa in Abuja.
The primary objective of this trust fund is to provide the Federal Government with a means to respond swiftly and effectively to humanitarian crises and poverty-related situations within the country. The Federal Government aims to generate a minimum of $5 billion annually to support the trust fund’s operations.
The funding for this initiative will be derived from various sources, including the Federal Government itself, private organizations, international bodies, and individuals who wish to contribute. The inclusive approach of sourcing funding from multiple stakeholders underscores the commitment to addressing humanitarian issues and poverty nationally.
In her statement, Minister Betta Edu emphasized that the state governments will play an integral role in this project, ensuring a coordinated and comprehensive approach to tackling these pressing issues.
Furthermore, FEC also decided on the welfare of the elderly population in the country. They resolved to ratify the protocol for the protection of the rights of elderly citizens in line with the African Charter. This move underscores the government’s dedication to ensuring the well-being and protection of older citizens in Nigeria.
