A tragic incident unfolded in Kidandan, Giwa Local Government Area (LGA) of Kaduna state on Saturday afternoon, as at least nine children sustained severe injuries in an explosion. Mansir Hassan, the police spokesperson in Kaduna, confirmed the distressing development, revealing that the explosion occurred during the children’s playtime.
According to Hassan, the children had found an object in a bush and brought it to a school where they were engaged in recreational activities. Unaware of the potential danger, the children attempted to open the object, triggering an explosion that resulted in injuries to nine of them.
“We received the information through the DPO. You know that area is the operational area where the security agencies are conducting a lot of operation in the bush,” explained the police spokesperson. “So, the young boys went to the bush and they saw an object and took it to the school.”
He continued, “When they got to the school, since they didn’t know what the object was, they decided to open it to see. So, in the process, it exploded and left about nine of them injured.”
The injured children are currently receiving medical treatment at a nearby facility. The Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) unit of the police has visited the scene to investigate and determine the nature of the explosion.
