Ex-NUPENG Gen Secretary, Frank Kokori dies at 80

He played a significant role in the popular nationwide protest against the June 12, 1993 election annulment.

Chief Frank Ovie Kokori, the former General Secretary of the Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers, NUPENG, has died.

He was eighty years old.

Chief Frank Kokori died in the early hours of Thursday at a kidney treatment hospital in Warri, Delta State.

One of his aides, who confirmed the heartbreaking news to Vanguard, stated that he would like the family to formally break the news to the media.

“He passed on this night. I would want the family to break the news formally to the media.

“I am his aide but at this moment I am not to speak on this until the family issues a statement,” he said.

Frank Ovie Kokori is a former labor leader and elder statesman in Nigeria.

He was the Secretary-General of the National Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Employees (NUPENG).

He played a significant role in the popular nationwide protest against the June 12, 1993 election annulment and the subsequent death of Chief Moshood Abiola, the presumed winner of the election under the regime of late Gen. Sani Abacha.
