An improvised explosive device (IED) burst on the Maiduguri-Damboa route in Borno state on Saturday, killing at least eight travellers.
According to the Borno police, the event occurred on a commercial bus from Damboa to Maiduguri, the state capital. Eleven other people were critically hurt.
“At about 11:45hrs today, a tragic incident occurred at Komala Village, Konduga LGA, Borno State,” Nahum Daso, police spokesperson, said in a statement made available to TheCable.
“A Hummer Bus vehicle with registration number Jigawa MMR 144 XA, stepped on an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) suspected to have been planted by Boko Haram/ISWAP terrorists.
“The explosion resulted in the deaths of eight individuals, including the driver, while eleven others sustained various injuries. The injured victims have been taken to the State Specialist Hospital in Maiduguri for treatment.
“Joint Clearance operation between the police and military ongoing.”
Babagana Zulum, governor of the state, who visited the victims at the hospital, commanded that they be provided free medical treatment.
Zulum also offered everyone of the injured N50,000 cash as immediate assistance.
On April 8, Zulum voiced alarm about the return of Boko Haram attacks and kidnappings around the state.
The governor added that increased Boko Haram raids and kidnappings in numerous Borno areas demonstrate that the state is losing ground.
He also stated that the recent removal of military formations from various LGAs is a “significant setback” in the country’s war against insurgency.
There have been a number of attacks in the state recently.
On March 21, four passengers were murdered and four others were injured when an improvised explosive device (IED) exploded beneath a commercial vehicle in Biu LGA of the state.
