Edwin Clark dies at 97

The outspoken Ijaw leader and critic served as a senator for three months in 1983 under Shehu Shagari.

Edwin Clark, a former federal Commissioner of Information and notable Ijaw leader, has died.

According to a statement from the Clark-Fuludu Bekederemo family of Kiagbodo, Delta state, the former senator died on Monday, February 17.

He was 97 years old.

“The family appreciates your prayers at this time. Other details will be announced later by the family,” the statement reads.

Clark served as the Pan Niger Delta Forum’s (PANDEF) leader until his death.

His political career began in 1953, when he was elected councillor of Bomadi, Delta State. Clark later joined the National Council of Nigeria and the Cameroons (NCNC) political party.

From 1966 to 1975, he was the Midwestern commissioner of education and, later, finance.

He joined the National Party of Nigeria (NPN) during the second republic and served as its treasurer in the old Bendel state.
