The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has issued a stern appeal to the political class in Senegal, urging them to refrain from violence and uphold the provisions of the country’s Constitution amidst concerns over the electoral calendar.
In a statement released on Tuesday in Abuja, the ECOWAS Commission expressed deep concern over the unfolding situation in Senegal. The Commission cautioned against any actions or statements that may contravene the country’s Constitution, emphasizing the paramount importance of maintaining peace and stability.
“The ECOWAS Commission encourages the political class to take urgent steps to restore the electoral calendar in accordance with the provisions of Senegal’s Constitution. In these challenging times for the country and the region, the Commission calls on all stakeholders to reject violence and any other actions that could further disrupt the peace and stability of the country,” the statement read.
The warning from ECOWAS comes in the wake of a significant development in Senegal’s political landscape. The country’s parliament recently voted overwhelmingly in support of postponing the February 25 election to December 15. This decision followed President Macky Sall’s indefinite postponement of the election.
The move to postpone the election has sparked concerns and heightened tensions within Senegal, prompting ECOWAS to intervene and advocate for a peaceful resolution. The regional body stressed the importance of adhering to constitutional provisions and restoring the electoral calendar to ensure a democratic and orderly process.
