ECOWAS orders deployment of standby force in Niger

The decision was reached following ECOWAS's second extraordinary meeting in Abuja.

The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has issued a directive for standby military troops to be deployed.

This is aimed at reinstating constitutional order in the Niger Republic.

The decision was reached following ECOWAS’s second extraordinary meeting in Abuja. The meeting was convened to address the ongoing political crisis in Niger.

Omar Alieu Touray, the President of ECOWAS, announced this directive while reading out the resolution of the meeting held in Abuja on Thursday.

Furthermore, ECOWAS urged the African Union (AU), partner countries, and institutions to provide their support for the resolution taken by the sub-regional body.

In light of the situation, ECOWAS stated that all attempts to engage in dialogue with the military junta in Niger Republic had been resolutely rejected by the coup leaders.

ECOWAS expressed its condemnation of the continued detainment of President Mohamed Bazoum and his family members.

A section of the resolution reads as follows:

“Direct the committee of the Chief of Defence Staff to activate the ECOWAS standby force with all its elements immediately.

“Order the deployment of the ECOWAS stand-by force to restore constitutional order in the Republic of Niger. Underscore its continued commitment to the restoration of constitutional order through peaceful means.”
