A powerful earthquake in Afghanistan has resulted in a significant loss of life and extensive damage.
According to Mullah Janan Sayeeq, a spokesperson for the ministry of disasters, at least 2,000 people have been killed, and more than 9,000 have been injured.
Additionally, 1,329 houses have been damaged or destroyed.
The earthquakes occurred approximately 35 km (20 miles) northwest of the city of Herat, with one registering a magnitude of 6.3.
The initial death toll given by the United Nations was 320, but it is now being verified.
The UN also reported 465 houses destroyed and 135 damaged due to the quakes.
“Partners and local authorities anticipate the number of casualties to rise as search and rescue efforts continue amid reports that some people may be trapped under collapsed buildings,” the UN said.
A health department official said more than 200 bodies have been taken to hospitals, most of them women and children.
“Bodies had been taken to several places — military bases, hospitals,” the official said.
The earthquake in Afghanistan in 2022 was indeed a devastating event.
It resulted in the deaths of at least 1,000 people and left another 1,500 injured.
The earthquake primarily affected the southeastern city of Khost and caused extensive damage to numerous properties.
It was considered the deadliest earthquake to strike Afghanistan in two decades.
Earthquakes can have significant and tragic consequences, particularly in areas with inadequate infrastructure and preparedness for such events.
