Rabiu Kwankwaso, the party’s presidential candidate in the 2023 elections, has been expelled by a faction of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) led by Agbo Major.
The NNPP’s board of trustees (BoT), led by the party’s founder, Boniface Aniebonam, suspended Kwankwaso last Tuesday over allegations of anti-party activities.
However, a Kwankwaso-supporting faction of the party overturned the suspension.
The party’s national executive council had also formed a disciplinary committee to investigate Kwankwaso’s allegations of anti-party activities and mismanagement of party funds.
The former Kano governor was told he had five days to appear before the committee after receiving the invitation.
The NEC had warned Kwankwaso that if he did not appear before the disciplinary committee, he would be expelled in accordance with the provisions of the NNPP’s constitution.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, Abdulsalam Abdulrasaq, the NNPP’s acting national publicity secretary, stated that the NEC decided to expel him due to his refusal to accept the committee’s invitation.
“Following the refusal of Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso to appear before the Disciplinary Committee which sat on Thursday 31st August 2023 after being duly invited in writing, he is hereby expelled from New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) with immediate effect,” Abdulrasaq said.
Abdulrasaq added that Kwankwaso would be reported to appropriate quarters to answer questions on “financial impropriety relating to mismanagement of public funds.”
