A federal high court in Abuja has granted N10 million bail with one surety to Omoyele Sowore, the African Action Congress‘s (AAC) 2023 presidential candidate.
The sitting judge, Musa Liman, directed Sowore to deposit his passport with the court registrar on Thursday.
Liman determined that the surety must have verified landed property in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
Following the ruling, Sowore‘s counsel, Marshall Abubakar, begged the court to return his client to the legal team within a few hours pending the fulfillment of the bail requirement.
The judge gave Sowore a 24-hour extension to remain with his counsel.
The case has been delayed until April for further trial.
On Wednesday, Sowore was charged with 16 counts of cybercrime.
The police had accused Sowore of using his X account to refer to Kayode Egbetokun, the inspector-general of police, as “Illegal IGP”. The activist has pleaded not guilty to all counts.
Sowore was seized by police on Monday after accepting an invitation to the Nigeria Police Force’s (NPF) headquarters.
Although the police granted administrative bail to Sowore, the activist refused it, calling the bail conditions “ridiculous”.
