Kudirat Kekere-Ekun, Nigeria’s Chief Justice (CJN), summoned some judges for inconsistent court verdicts in political issues in Rivers state.
On Tuesday, the CJN summoned the chief judge of the Federal High Court for examination.
The National Judicial Council (NJC) has appointed a panel to investigate the judges, and the CJN has ordered that the findings be submitted this week.
A former Court of Appeals justice will lead the panel, including two court heads.
The top justice of the Rivers State High Court will appear before the NJC panel next week for the same purpose.
The summons was issued after official complaints were lodged with the council.
On September 4, the state’s high court ruled that the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC) could hold the LGA elections using the 2023 voter registration.
However, on September 30, a federal high court in Abuja prevented the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) from releasing the voter record to the RSIEC.
The court also barred the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) and other security agencies from providing security during the elections.
However, the Rivers governor urged that the RSIEC continue with the poll, claiming that the court ruling did not halt the process.
On October 2, INEC stated that it had not given the voter registration following the order; however, the RSIEC stated that it had received a copy of the register from INEC since 2023.
On October 5, the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC) held council elections in the state’s 23 local government areas.
The election was held amid a continuing conflict between Wike, Rivers’ immediate previous governor, and his successor, Siminalayi Fubara.
