Chidimma Adetshina, a contestant in the Miss South Africa pageant, has withdrawn from the competition, citing concerns for the safety and well-being of herself and her family.
This decision follows a series of controversies surrounding the pageant, particularly after the South African government accused Chidimma’s mother of fraud and identity theft.
The 23-year-old contestant became the target of hostile, xenophobic attacks on social media after she was named a finalist in July. Her credentials were questioned by many, including cabinet ministers.
The controversy prompted the Home Affairs Ministry to investigate her citizenship, following a request from the pageant’s organizers. The investigation revealed “prima facie indications” that Chidimma’s mother may have committed fraud and stolen the identity of a South African woman after Chidimma was born, the ministry stated on Wednesday.
In a post on her Instagram account, Chidimma expressed her gratitude for the support she received throughout her journey, but emphasized that her family’s safety is her top priority.
“With a heavy heart, I have decided to withdraw from the Miss South Africa 2024 competition to protect the safety and well-being of my family,” she wrote. “I am deeply thankful for the incredible experience and the support of the Miss South Africa Organization. I wish my fellow finalists the best of luck for the rest of the competition. Whoever wears the crown represents us all.”
