Amnesty International has condemned the killing of Usman Buda at a market in Sokoto over alleged blasphemy.
During an argument at the Sokoto main abattoir around 8 a.m. on Sunday, it was reported that Buda, a butcher, made the comment.
The mob subsequently attacked and killed him.
However, in a statement on Sunday, the acting Director of Amnesty International Nigeria, Isa Sanusi called on the government to investigate the incident and bring the culprits to book.
Sanusi also urged the government to urgently nip the spate of killings over allegations of blasphemy in the bud.
The statement urged Nigerian authorities to swiftly investigate the incident and ensure accountability for those responsible.
The alarming rise in blasphemy killings highlights the urgent need for Nigerian authorities to uphold international human rights obligations. Failing to ensure accountability for such killings perpetuates a permissive environment for brutality.
