Benue: Kidnapped commissioner gains freedom

Mr. Matthew Abo, the Commissioner for Information, Culture, and Tourism in Benue State, who was abducted over a week ago, has been released and reunited with his family. This positive outcome was confirmed in a statement by Tersoo Kula, the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor of Benue State.

The commissioner was kidnapped in Sankera, Ukum Local Government Area. His release came as a result of Governor Hyacinth Alia’s order to security agencies to intensify efforts to secure his freedom. Notably, no ransom or monetary exchange was involved in securing his release, as the Chief Press Secretary stated.

However, the statement revealed that Mr. Washima Erukaa, a former Chairman of Ukum LGA, and his cousin, who had discreetly negotiated with the kidnappers for Abo’s release, were also abducted and remain in the custody of the criminals.

Governor Alia warned criminals sternly, emphasizing that the state would not tolerate criminal activities under any circumstances. He commended the efforts of the security personnel involved in securing Abo’s release and urged them to continue their work to free the other hostages.

Furthermore, the governor directed security forces to take strong measures against criminals, ensuring they are unable to operate within the state.

Mr. Matthew Abo was abducted by gunmen from his Sankera residence on the evening of September 24, 2023. His release brings relief to his family and the community, while efforts continue to secure the release of others held captive.
