The Bayelsa State Government announced on Friday that it is implementing a strategic response framework to control the spread of the Monkeypox virus within the state.
In a statement released in Yenagoa, Commissioner for Health Seiyefa Brisibe reported that the state has recorded 83 suspected cases and five confirmed cases of the disease, with no fatalities.
Brisibe emphasized that, given the global increase in Monkeypox cases, Bayelsa has adopted a multi-dimensional approach focusing on surveillance, prevention, and community engagement.
Key elements of this strategy include enhanced case detection, aimed at quickly identifying, isolating, and managing individuals showing symptoms such as fever, rash, and swollen lymph nodes.
The Health Ministry is also strengthening the capacity of healthcare workers across the state by offering extensive training programs designed to improve their skills in diagnosis, treatment, and prevention as a frontline defense.
In addition, Brisibe revealed that the state has launched a comprehensive public awareness campaign through radio, social media, and community forums to educate residents on Mpox, its symptoms, transmission methods, and preventive measures.
To support these efforts, the state is also procuring personal protective equipment for healthcare facilities to protect workers and bolster the overall response.
