The Federation International Basketball Association selected Nigeria to host eight other African basketball teams in the pre-qualifiers for the Olympic Games in Paris.
From August 12 to 20, the FIBA Pre-Olympics African Qualifier takes place at Lagos’ Eko Hotel and Suites. Teams including Senegal, Mali, Uganda, Congo DR, Cameroun, Guinea, Tunisia, and host Nigeria compete for a cherished Olympic Games continent-representing slot.
The teams are split into two groups of four each, and the top two teams from each group advance to the semi-finals. An African representative will emerge between the winners of both semi-final matches.
Nigeria’s D’Tigers, Africa’s top-ranked team, poised for Paris 2024 representation. 23 members chosen, including NBA players from world’s premier basketball league. High odds for African representation.
Ahmadu Kida affirmed his commitment
Speaking ahead of the tournament, The President of the Nigerian Basketball Federation, Ahmadu Kida reaffirmed its commitment to a successful and hitch-free tournament with high expectations of great performance from Team Nigeria.
“The opportunity to host the African Olympics Qualifier is a testament to our past hosting endeavors and the confidence of FIBA Africa in the NBBF. We are proud to showcase our country Nigeria, the beauty of Lagos, and the incredible talents of the D tigers to the world. We will continue to use our basketball to make Nigeria proud,” he said
The 9-day tourney goes live, seen by 70M across 60 countries. Over 8K spectators expected. Honoring Nigerian basketball icons, including players and officials. 40 teams vie for Olympic qualification, 5 from global regions advance to 2024 final qualifiers: Asia, Africa, Americas, Europe. Paris, France will host the Olympic Games from July 26 to August 11.
