Arrested nurse who injected Mohbad not eligible to practise – Lagos NANNM

The Lagos chapter of the nursing association said the suspect arrested in connection with Mohbad's death is not qualified to practise.

The Lagos State Council of the National Association of Nigeria Nurses and Midwives (NANNM) has refuted media claims suggesting that a member was apprehended for administering an injection to the late singer, Ilerioluwa Aloba, popularly known as Mohbad.

Earlier reports had implied that a nurse associated with NANNM was arrested for administering the injection that allegedly contributed to Mohbad’s passing on September 12.

However, the State Secretary of the council, Toba Odumosu, clarified in a statement on Saturday that the individual arrested for administering the injection is not a registered nurse.

“We fully support the ongoing investigation into the circumstances surrounding his death and urge the relevant authorities to leave no stone unturned in the pursuit of justice for him.

“However, we must stress the importance of professionalism in reporting and conducting this investigation. NANNM is closely monitoring the situation with keen interest. Our preliminary investigations indicate that the individual reportedly taken into custody by the police for providing care to Mohbad is not a registered Nurse.

“We emphasise the critical need to verify the qualifications and professional status of individuals before labelling them as healthcare professionals.”

The association emphasized the importance of professionalism and accuracy in reporting during ongoing investigations.

The council lamented the regulatory challenges in Nigeria’s healthcare system, resulting in unqualified individuals performing medical roles they are not trained for. It stressed the need to distinguish between qualified nurses and unqualified individuals performing tasks beyond their competence.

NANNM urged investigating authorities and the media to exercise caution and accuracy in reporting, emphasizing their commitment to defending the integrity of nurses and the nursing profession. They demanded immediate corrective action from media outlets that inaccurately reported the arrest of a nurse.
