Army detains soldier for killing lover in Enugu

The Nigerian Army has initiated an investigation into the alleged killing of a woman named Hauwakulu Tabra by a soldier identified as Private Adamu Muhammad at a barracks in Enugu State. The incident took place on April 11, 2024, with the victim’s body discovered within the barracks the following day.

In a statement issued by Major General Onyema Nwachukwu, Director of Army Public Relations, on Sunday, it was expressed with regret that the victim lost her life at the hands of a soldier with whom she was reportedly in an amorous relationship. Preliminary investigations have pointed to Private Adamu Muhammad as the perpetrator, who is currently under detention as further inquiries are conducted to ascertain the motive behind the act.

Contrary to reports from an online platform (not Channels Television), Major General Nwachukwu clarified that Private Adamu Muhammad is not a former member of the terrorist organization Boko Haram. He emphasized that the Nigerian Army has never enlisted repentant Boko Haram members, past or present, into its ranks. However, he noted that consideration has been given to members of the Civilian Joint Task Force (CJTF) who have demonstrated exceptional commitment, dedication, and loyalty in combating terrorism and insurgency in the North East.

The Army extended sincere condolences to the family of the deceased and assured the public that justice would prevail in the matter. Major General Nwachukwu emphasized the Army’s commitment to maintaining professionalism and discipline within its ranks, ensuring that no unprofessional conduct or indiscipline is tolerated.
