Tobi Amusan has secured her third consecutive national title in the women’s 100 meters hurdles event.
The 26-year-old clocks an impressive 12.70 seconds at the AFN national trials in Benin, Edo state, comfortably leading the one-sided final.
This victory adds to Amusan’s consecutive national titles from the Olympic trials in Lagos (2021) and Benin (last year).
Just last week, she claimed her first Diamond League win of the season in Stockholm, Sweden, with a remarkable finish of 12.52 seconds.
Amusan gained global recognition in 2022 as the first Nigerian world champion. This was after achieving a wind-aided time of 12.06 seconds (ineligible as a world record due to strong wind).
She had previously set a new world record of 12.12 seconds in the event’s semi-final.
The reigning world champion and record holder is set to defend her title at the upcoming World Athletics Championship in Budapest later this year.
In the men’s 100 meters sprint, Usheoritse Itsekiri claims the title with a time of 10.02 seconds, outperforming Favour Ashe, Seye Ogunlewe, and Enoch Adegoke.
Chukwuebuka Enekwechi successfully defends his national title in men’s shot put, achieving a distance throw of 21.09 meters.
