The Senate has ordered a slight reorganisation of its standing committees.
Senate President Godswill Akpabio stated that the reforms are part of efforts to increase legislative productivity.
“We will continue to make adjustments where necessary in order to deliver on our legislative mandate,” Akpabio said.
He also asked Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele to ensure that all committees submit activity reports for consideration on the Senate floor.
In a welcome address to plenary on Tuesday, Akpabio asked his colleagues to recommit to national service with integrity and patriotism.
He urged MPs to focus legislative efforts on matters that foster national unity.
Simon Lalong, senator for Plateau South, has been appointed chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and electoral matters committee.
Lalong succeeds Sharafadeen Ali, a senator representing Oyo South, who has chaired the committee since the 10th National Assembly’s inception.
Ali has been reassigned as chairman of the committee on agricultural institutions and research, a position previously held by Lalong.
Senator Anthony Ani, who represents Ebonyi South, will step down as head of the tourism committee.
Pam Nwadkon, the senator representing Plateau North, will now lead the tourism committee.
Senator Eze Kenneth Emeka, who represents Ebonyi Central, has been dismissed from his position as vice-chairman of the South East Development Commission (SEDC). That role has been assigned to Ani.
Emeka, however, retains his role as chairman of the committee on information and remains vice chairman of the committee on water resources.
