Air force officer foils ‘one-chance’ robbery, rescues victims in Abuja

A serving Nigerian Air Force (NAF) officer, Air Commodore John Ijudigal, demonstrated exceptional courage and heroism as he foiled a robbery and kidnapping attempt by suspected criminals, commonly known as ‘one-chance’ operators, in Abuja.

The incident unfolded on February 14, 2024, at Accra Road, Wuse Zone 5, where Air Commodore Ijudigal encountered a distressing scene while commuting home from work. He witnessed an Abuja-painted taxi, with terrified passengers inside, being pursued by a black Toyota Land Cruiser. Reacting swiftly, Air Commodore Ijudigal used his official vehicle to block the criminals’ escape route.

In the ensuing confrontation, the ‘one-chance’ vehicle collided with Air Commodore Ijudigal’s vehicle, causing significant damage. Despite this, he pursued one of the suspects who attempted to flee into nearby bushes. With the assistance of onlookers, three suspects were apprehended, and two female victims were rescued.

Following the incident, Air Commodore Ijudigal ensured the apprehended suspects were handed over to the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Commissioner of Police, Mr. Benneth Igweh. The FCT Commissioner of Police commended Air Commodore Ijudigal for his bravery, stating that his intervention averted a potential tragedy and restored confidence in the security forces.

Air Marshal Hasan Abubakar, Chief of the Air Staff, also praised Air Commodore Ijudigal for his courageous and selfless act of service. Air Commodore Ijudigal, a former NAF Deputy Director of Sports and current Deputy Director of Logistics at the Defence Headquarters, exemplified the dedication and commitment of the Nigerian Air Force to protecting citizens and maintaining security in the nation.
