In Apple Music’s recently released end-of-the-year streaming numbers for 2023, the unwavering dominance of Nigeria’s Afrobeats genre is evident, particularly in Ghana.
The charts, covering plays from November 1, 2022, to October 31, 2023, revealed that all the top 10 songs streamed by Ghanaians during this period were Nigerian hits.
Asake‘s “Lonely At The Top” claimed the number one spot on the Ghana chart.
The top three included “Soweto” by Victony and Tempoe, and “Xtra Cool” by Young Jonn.
Nigerian artists Ruger, Omah Lay, Ayra Starr, Fireboy DML, Asake, Davido, and Burna Boy secured spots in the top 10.
Davido’s Grammy-nominated “UNAVAILABLE” and Burna Boy’s “Last Last” were among the top-ranked songs.
Afrobeats’ influence extended beyond Ghana, reaching Kenya, where the top 10 chart was also dominated by Nigerian hits.
Rema’s remix of “Calm Down” featuring Selena Gomez secured the 12th spot globally, marking a significant entry for an African song.
The widespread success of Nigerian Afrobeats on the global streaming charts underscores the genre’s expanding influence and popularity beyond national borders.
