The National Television Authority (NTA) announced on Wednesday that it has secured the exclusive rights to broadcast all 52 African Cup of Nations (AFCON) matches in 2023.
This comes after MultiChoice, the owner of the cable platform DSTV, announced that the tournament would not be broadcast on SuperSport (SS).
“In a groundbreaking move, the NTA and Afro Sports have inked a game-changing memorandum of understanding to broadcast 52 thrilling matches of the Africa Cup of Nations in Cote d’Ivoire,” NTA posted on X.
According to TheGuardian, MultiChoice confirmed last Wednesday that it had not secured the rights to broadcast the 2023 AFCON.
“However, AFCON 2023 games will be available through our partner broadcast stations on Free to Air (FTA) channels,” Multichoice said.
The 2023 AFCON will begin on January 13, 2024, with a Group A match between the host country, Ivory Coast, and Guinea Bissau at the Alassane Ouattara Stadium in Abidjan.
The Super Eagles of Nigeria are also in Group A, along with Ivory Coast, Equatorial Guinea, and Guinea Bissau.
Nigeria’s first game is against Equatorial Guinea on Sunday, January 14 at 2:00 p.m. at the Alassane Ouattara Stadium in Abidjan.
The Super Eagles will attempt to win the AFCON tournament for the fourth time, having done so previously in Nigeria in 1980, Tunisia in 1994, and South Africa in 2013.
