Adelabu summons TCN, NERC over grid collapse

Adelabu also formed a forensic investigation committee with the mandate to advise the government on necessary solutions to make the national grid more robust and reliable.

Chief Adebayo Adelabu, Minister of Power, has invited the leadership of the Nigeria Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) and the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) for an emergency meeting.

Adelabu expressed his disappointment with the occurrence, which he said had the potential to undermine the great achievements made in the last year, which has resulted in an increase in generation and distribution of 5, 527 megawatts, a three-year high.

Bolaji Tunji, his Special Adviser for Strategic Communication and Media Relations, stated in a statement in Abuja on Tuesday.

According to the statement, Adelabu also formed a forensic investigation committee with the mandate to advise the government on necessary solutions to make the national grid more robust and reliable. This is in addition to the government’s ongoing efforts such as the Presidential Power Initiatives (PPI) and the Nigeria Electricity Transmission Project (NETAP).

The Committee is also tasked with determining the core cause of both accidents, as well as investigating potential system sabotage.

The Committee will conduct a comprehensive analysis of national grid stability and identify the investments and technical capacities required to make the grid smart and resilient.

A technical team has also been deployed to access the critical nodes on the national grid to detect potential vulnerabilities and provide recommendations to resolve these vulnerabilities in order to prevent further interruption.

The six-member committee is led by Engr. Nafisat Ali, Executive Director, Independent System Operator (ISO), and includes Dr. Chidi Ike, Commissioner, NERC, Engr. Ishola (GM, National Control Centre (NCC), Engr. Emmanuel Nosike, Director, Transmission, Federal Ministry of Power (FMoP), Engr. Ali Sharifai (GM, Transmission Service Provider (TSP), and Mr. Adedayo Olowoniyi, Chief Technical Adviser to the Minister of Power.

The team is scheduled to provide a report to the Minister by November 1, 2024.
