‘A Tribe Called Judah’ hits N400 million, emerges highest grossing movie of 2023

Renowned Nollywood figure, Funke Akindele, has once again achieved remarkable success with her latest film, ‘A Tribe Called Judah,’ raking in an impressive N400 million within its initial 12 days of screening. This triumph has propelled the movie to claim the coveted title of the highest-grossing film of 2023.

The Cinema Exhibitors Association of Nigeria (CEAN), responsible for compiling movie screening statistics, disclosed this achievement in a tweet on Tuesday.

‘A Tribe Called Judah,’ both written and produced by Funke Akindele, demonstrated its box office potential by generating a staggering sixty million naira within just two days of its release.

Film One Entertainment, a prominent cinema group, announced this milestone on Instagram, showcasing ‘A Tribe Called Judah’ as the highest-grossing movie of 2023 and securing a position among the top five highest-grossing Nigerian movies of all time, alongside acclaimed productions like ‘The Wedding Party’ and ‘Omo Ghetto: The Saga.’

Outpacing notable titles such as ‘Merry Men 3,’ ‘Orisa,’ ‘Kesari,’ ‘The Kujus Again,’ and ‘Something Like Gold,’ ‘A Tribe Called Judah,’ both produced and directed by Funke Akindele, revolves around the character Jedidah Judah, a single mother played by Akindele herself, and her sons fathered by different men.

The film features a talented ensemble cast, including Jide Kene Achufusi, Timini Egbuson, among others.

Funke Akindele, known for her record-breaking movies, including ‘Battle on Buka Street,’ which grossed N640 million over 9 weeks in cinemas, establishing itself as the second-highest-grossing movie of 2022 according to CEAN.

Funke continues to leave an indelible mark on the industry, showcasing her versatility as an actor, producer, and now director, with various successful films, including ‘She Must Be Obeyed,’ released on Prime Video a few months ago.
